What
is a get-together without an Information Booth? This is the ultimate
Information Station to be sure with two wonderful, opinion-packed,
history buffs who had answers to questions you'd never think of asking.
Next year, try to stump them with some hard interrogation, not
the easy stuff like, "Where's the bathroom" or "Do you
know where the mayor is?"
PIONEER
BELLES
Danielle
Pangborn of Creston, Katie Hutchings of Union, Becky Berlogio of
Adelaide, Natalie Toevs of Willow Creek, Brianna Bonnifield of San
Miguel, Christina Roden of Cholame, Carly Twisselman of Carrisa Plains,
Savanna Lewis of Shandon and Katy Erb of Templeton.
Past
Queens and Marshals join the hoopla. Just think, someone you know right
now might be sitting in this same trolley in another forty or fifty
years! Or better yet, it might be YOU!
Here's
my favorite interviewee at the Pioneer Day Shindig. This is the famous
Tractor Guy, Jake Barkey. Young Jake is an almond rancher who
specializes in restoring old tractors. He knew most if not all of the
parade drivers and all about what they were driving, including the
little
rig that
used to belong to Clark Gable. Yes, ladies, this untoward and
unkempt tracklayer was manned by the man himself so many moons ago.
Clark loved driving this thing and would have to be called a number of
times by his wife, Carole Lombard, before he'd go to dinner. You can
read a 1941 article about it here:
Ah, yes,
a man and his car. What a love affair to remember, especially after all
of that hard-earned cash has trickled into it. Most men are a bit
jealous of the Tim Taylors of the world, at least in the car ownership
area. But most of us are way too pragmatic, poor, or hen-pecked to do
anything about it.
That's
Jack and Ginnie Guffey on the right pretending they're being chauffeured
in their little Chevy limo. Jack
has that celebrity look in his eye, while Ginnie sports her Hollywood
aura.
